Search Engine Optimisation FAQs:
- Why is Keyword Research important?
- Why is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) so important?
- I have already had someone perform SEO but it didn't seem to improve my Search Engine Listings?
- Is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Snake Oil?
Q. Why is Keyword Research important?
To better understand what Keyword Research is and why it is important to commission an SEO professional to perform this task before your website is designed and your copy is written, please read this article called Basic SEO Tips – Starting a Website the Right Way.

Q. Why is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) so important?
Imagine this for a moment. You have an online business selling recipe cook books but currently your website is NOT listed on page 1 in Google, Bing or Yahoo for commonly searched phrases like "buy recipe cook books online" or "recipes online". Imagine all the potential traffic and sales you are missing out on.
This above example not only applies to shop websites but also websites that promote a service, industry or organisation.
By using SEO you can attract customers and compete online in areas outside of your own town or city (or compete more effectively if you are in a larger city). If you're not currently applying SEO to your website in this way be aware that your competitors, whether you know of them or not, are.
Q. I have already had someone perform SEO but it didn't seem to improve my Search Engine Listings?
This unfortunately is sometimes a common complaint. SEO needs to be done by experts who know what they are doing, people who will measure the SEO effectiveness and report back to you. You also need to trust that they will be there to check not only your SEO potency periodically but also keep an eye out on what your competitors are up to. Search is a very big industry and very competitive in a lot of business sectors.
Your SEO expert also needs to have your best interests at heart.
Unfortunately in the past and even still today, some only POSE as SEO professionals. They take your money not really knowing what they are doing (or even worse thinking they do), tweak a few things on your website and let you believe SEO is now done. They may indicate it's a one-off task and you can now mark it off your 'to do list'. Even worse still are those who put you on a monthly payment plan but consider it easy money and fail to delivery. In today's competitive online marketplace it is simply not that simple.
Q. Is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Snake Oil?
The answer is NO it is not snake oil. It is however only 1 ingredient used within a successful website. When performed correctly SEO will help you attract the right kind of traffic to your website, but once qualified visitors are on your site it's your content that needs to be captivating in order for them to stay and interact. Basically your website content needs to immerse and engage.
Content, content, content. It’s an obvious part of any interactive experience. In fact, you’ve probably heard content is king, or queen, or some sort of royalty. Yet, quality content is elusive and takes time to plan and create.
Search engines seek quality content definable as accurate flowing text that is useful, compelling and easy to understand. Here is a very good article on how to write quality website copy. A Search Engines code algorithm actually factors in signs of good content.
When someone focuses on tips and tricks to game search engines instead of publishing quality content consistently over time, that person is missing the spirit of SEO. And, sooner or later, that person’s results will suffer for it. Google might punish the website or, more likely, the website will get the wrong kind of visitors. If you drive lots of visitors to your content instead of attracting visitors who are interested in the content topics, you will be disappointed with the results.
Responsible SEO professionals place an emphasis on good website content that is kept fresh and up to date. This is why we advise our clients to learn how to write good website copy, manage a blog (or news section) and look for opportunities to add other engaging content types into their websites. This might include video, images, diagrams, slide-shows presentations, infographics and other visual elements that help communicate your message and keep visitors glued to their seats.
Just remember that SEO tricks are not magic pills for your content ills. If you’re spending lots of time and money on SEO but not much on content, you’re on the way to disappointment.
A professional blogger named Andy Budd recently discussed a closely related point of view in this recent article. He requested “white hat” SEO practitioners to distance themselves from the world of SEO, stop talking about search engine rankings and start helping clients deliver real value to their users. Though measuring ranking performance is still important, I do agree with this statement.
Note: Portions of this FAQ have been extracted from a recently published Smashing Magazine article titled Make Your Content Make a Difference and therefore needs to be credited.
Here is a related article explaining why content marketing continues to be effective.
